Today’s annual Earth Day Doodle was created in partnership with one of the planet’s most influential advocates: Ethologist (animal behavior expert), conservationist, activist, and animal-lover Dr. Jane Goodall, who has dedicated her life to studying and protecting our environment. In it, Jane shares her personal message to the world on Earth Day 2018, including some of her inspiration and what we can all do to have a positive impact on our planet.

Saving the planet one dollar at a time: Earth Day 2016

A long time ago, I inspired by “The Man who Planted Trees” (by Jean Giono), I decided to become *a man who plants trees*. Through my life, I must have planted over 1000 trees (including transplanting those college-days avocado seeds which are now huge trees), just as many bushes & a countless numbers of perennials & annuals.

This has been a feel-good, warm & fuzzy love affair, but, I think, not my most important lifetime contribution to the planet. Roughly the time I started planting, I had a life-changing conversation with an eminent professor of mine, a biologist that was very concerned about the fate of the planet (this is back in the days before global warming was even suspected to occur).

I was a 18-year old from Europe (where a squirrel is considered “wildlife”) at a California campus where mountain lions roamed. Concerned about “losing” the paradise of California to a european fate, I asked the wise biologist how I could contribute.

What he told me, changed my behavior forever….

Once a year a holiday known as Earth Day rolls around. For those of us that are in school, it’s a time to plant trees, start recycling programs and do other “earthy” things. But what does that mean? It seems that most people treat Earth Day day a bit like Valentines day or Saint Patricks day. Its simply an event on the calendar that doesn’t seem to have a lot of meaning anymore. In fact, the role Earth Day plays has changed since it was first concieved. But to understand that we need some history
