Rising CO2 Levels Greening Earth

From a quarter to half of Earth’s vegetated lands has shown significant greening over the last 35 years largely due to rising levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide, according to a new study published in the journal Nature Climate Change on April 25. The greening represents an increase in leaves on plants and trees equivalent in area to two times the continental United States.

Saving the planet one dollar at a time: Earth Day 2016

A long time ago, I inspired by “The Man who Planted Trees” (by Jean Giono), I decided to become *a man who plants trees*. Through my life, I must have planted over 1000 trees (including transplanting those college-days avocado seeds which are now huge trees), just as many bushes & a countless numbers of perennials & annuals.

This has been a feel-good, warm & fuzzy love affair, but, I think, not my most important lifetime contribution to the planet. Roughly the time I started planting, I had a life-changing conversation with an eminent professor of mine, a biologist that was very concerned about the fate of the planet (this is back in the days before global warming was even suspected to occur).

I was a 18-year old from Europe (where a squirrel is considered “wildlife”) at a California campus where mountain lions roamed. Concerned about “losing” the paradise of California to a european fate, I asked the wise biologist how I could contribute.

What he told me, changed my behavior forever….
