Saving the planet one dollar at a time: Earth Day 2016

A long time ago, I inspired by “The Man who Planted Trees” (by Jean Giono), I decided to become *a man who plants trees*. Through my life, I must have planted over 1000 trees (including transplanting those college-days avocado seeds which are now huge trees), just as many bushes & a countless numbers of perennials & annuals.

This has been a feel-good, warm & fuzzy love affair, but, I think, not my most important lifetime contribution to the planet. Roughly the time I started planting, I had a life-changing conversation with an eminent professor of mine, a biologist that was very concerned about the fate of the planet (this is back in the days before global warming was even suspected to occur).

I was a 18-year old from Europe (where a squirrel is considered “wildlife”) at a California campus where mountain lions roamed. Concerned about “losing” the paradise of California to a european fate, I asked the wise biologist how I could contribute.

What he told me, changed my behavior forever….
